Keep Moving - Diabetics

Physical activity or more particularly exercise should be encouraged in diabetics as it helps to enhance fitness thereby assisting to control diabetes. Physical activity or exercise should be considered as mandatory aspect of diabetic regime. Let us come across with some precautions that should be taken care in diabetic patients.

- It is vital that before starting exercise check blood pressure glucose and urine for ketones. If in case fasting blood glucose levels > 250 mg/dl and there is presence of ketones in urine than avoid exercise. Contrary, if blood glucose level is > 300 mg/dl and there are no ketones in urine then exercising should be done cautiously. Additionally, if glucose 300mg/dl or having blood pressure > 150/100 mm Hg should avoid heavy exercise or brisk walk.

- It is important to remember that you take small snack pre-exercising if you are on some anti-diabetic medication.

- It is recommended that you should consult your doctor to reduce the dose of medication if you are exercising moderately and regularly.

Some of the precautions for elderly diabetics are:

- Elderly age group diabetic patients should prefer to do regular exercise of low intensity.

- It is extremely important for elderly diabetic that they should get medical clearance before getting involved in any exercise regime.

Additionally, diabetic patients with nerve damage in the feet should avoid running on treadmill, prolonged walking, jogging and step exercising. Instead, they should go for no-weight bearing exercise like swimming, cycling, rowing, chair exercises and arm exercises.

So, it is time for diabetics to remember that they should keep going in whatever little way possible to remain fit and healthy!!!!!
