No one really knows at this time what the precipitating factor that happens first and starts insulin resistance. If we could discover the primary factor, we could concentrate our research on preventing this all-important first step on the critical path to insulin resistance.

That is why a recent report about glucagon has sparked a lot of interest. The study showed that by inhibiting the glucagon receptors, the insulin resistance was eliminated in the study animals. Glucagon is a hormone as is insulin. Both are produced in the pancreas. Glucagon counters the effects of insulin. Insulin is designed to lower the serum blood sugar. Glucagon works by raising the serum blood sugar. Together they account for the rise and fall of the blood sugar levels in the normal state.

When we think about insulin abnormalities, we tend to think that there is a problem with insulin and the cells. There is. The mechanism of action with regards to insulin seems to be blunted when insulin resistance is present.

Are we looking in the wrong place for the primary cause of insulin dysfunction? Could it be that the problem starts with glucagon? Only time will tell but the study brings a new and exciting perspective to our understanding of abnormal sugar metabolism.

It is currently estimated that as many as 50 million Americans have abnormal insulin metabolism. One of the earliest hallmarks of abnormal insulin metabolism is increased abdominal girth. If your waist-to-hip ratio is greater than 0.8, then you probably have increased fat stores around the abdomen and may well have altered insulin metabolism.

Insulin resistance is not the same as diabetes. Every instance of diabetes is associated with insulin resistance. However, every instance of insulin resistance is not associated with diabetes. There are many people who believe that insulin dysfunction is an early warning sign that often leads to type 2 diabetes.

What can be done now to help fight altered insulin metabolism and type 2 diabetes? People tout exercise as a means of fighting hyperglycemia or elevated blood sugar for a very good reason. Exercise uses the muscles to take sugar out of the blood. That is the function of insulin and exercise takes some of the pressure off of insulin and the pancreas.
