A Quick Guide to Diabetic Foot Care

One fifth of adult diabetics are hospitalized at some point in time for major foot complications. Type 2 diabetes contributes to foot issues in several ways. Diabetics often struggle with poor circulation, which impairs one's ability to heal wounds and fight infection. Diabetics also frequently experience neuropathy, acute nerve damage, which can diminish their ability to recognize and treat an injury. Small cuts and brittle calluses can become dangerous infections if they go unnoticed. This, in turn, can lead to hospitalization or even, in the most extreme instances, amputation. For these reasons, diabetic must be vigilant when it comes to caring for their feet. The following are the best practices for keeping diabetic feet happy and healthy.
If you have Type 2 Diabetes, take time everyday to care for your feet.Check your feet regularly for sores, blisters, cuts, calluses, or other issues. Never ignore any sort of irritation. If you have trouble seeing your feet, consider purchasing magnifying glasses and place a mirror on the floor or ask a family member check for you.Wash your feet thoroughly with lukewarm water, but refrain from soaking them for long periods of time. After washing, file down calluses and corns gently with an emery board. Coat your feet with a thin application of lotion. Avoid putting excess lotion between toes as these sorts of nooks can harbor bacteria.Trim your toenails once a week and file away any jagged edges.Visit the doctor at least once a month to have a formal foot check-up.Always wear comfortable diabetic shoes. This is critical as most foot ailments are rooted in poorly fitting shoes. Make sure they fit correctly and have bacteria-resistant breathable fabric. Always don seamless socks to prevent blisters.

This article is for informational purposes only and is not intended to diagnose or treat any medical condition, or be taken as medical advice. ALWAYS report any foot issues to your doctor immediately, especially if you notice swelling, pain, cracks, bleeding calluses, open sores, changes in color of the skin or nail, or distinct changes in skin temperature. For more information related to your unique situation, please speak with your personal physician.

Diabetic Meal Planning - The Basics

Diabetic meal planning can be quite confusing in the beginning. Even among experts there is some disagreement over the optimum diet for diabetics. However, diabetic meals will have a few things in common and they all possess the goal of controlling blood sugar levels. Sticking with a proper diet is vital towards the successful management of diabetes since it can lessen your dependence upon medication and help prevent complications out of your disease.

The main objective of diabetes meal planning would be to keep your blood sugar at a stable level and avoid dips and spikes. There are more benefits as well. Since type 2 diabetes and obesity often go hand-in-hand, a proper diet will also help slow or reverse weight gain and help normalize levels of cholesterol. Eating a healthy diet plan also ensures the body gets all the nutrients it needs to stay healthy and help you stay feeling well.

When it comes to diabetic meal planning, there are some important aspects to bear in mind. To begin with, this diet should be well-balanced which means you receive the important nutrients your body needs. It really should not be a drastic change from an ordinary diet, or else you might find it too hard to stay with. You should attempt to select meals plan that provides lots of variety so you do not get tired of your diet plan. It will be also simple to adhere to and be affordable.

Probably the most crucial areas of diabetic meal planning has to do with the frequency of the meals. You need to eat on a set schedule so you don't have long gaps between meals, or eat too often. Eating on the schedule helps maintain your blood sugar from dipping too low during long gaps or spiking after eating too much.

The kinds of foods you eat play a big role in how your blood sugar levels react too. This is when diabetic meal planning gets difficult for many people. Different foods cause different reactions in your blood sugar levels. Carbohydrates, particularly refined carbs such as sugar and foods created using white flour, cause your blood sugar levels to spike after you eat them.

Whole grains, or complex carbs, are metabolized by the body slower by eating those instead, you are able to avoid high blood glucose readings once you eat. In addition to the type of carbs you consume, you must also monitor the quantity you eat each day. This can vary based on every individual based on the extent of the disease and the amount of diabetes medication you take. That's the reason using a blood sugar monitor is essential; it lets you know precisely how your blood sugar levels react to the foods you consume.

Proper diabetic meal planning considers the amount of carbohydrates, fat, and calories you eat every day. A diet that's low in fat and calories can help you cope with accompanying unhealthy weight. The amount of calories you need every day is determined by your age, gender, and activity level. While diabetic meal planning might seem daunting at first, as time passes and exercise, it becomes second nature, and it is worth the effort because it can help you take control of your diabetes and for that reason extend your life.

Omega 3 Fish Oil - Pre Diabetes And The Diabetic Undershirt

Pre diabetes is a health state that is considered a possible precursor to type 2 diabetes. It is likely that it will be only a matter of time before pre diabetes is treated as a disease. People are looking for ways to decrease the effects of pre diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is a small vessel disease. The increased circulating blood sugar seems to "poison" the linings of small blood vessels. These blood vessel's linings thicken and make it more difficult for nutrients to cross from the blood stream into the surrounding tissues. As a result, tissues such as the eyes, heart and kidneys undergo pathological changes.

One of these changes occurs in the feet. The small vessel changes of high blood sugar levels cause the nerves throughout the body to lose function. In the feet, the nerves help monitor small changes in pressure and other potential injuries to the tissues in the feet. Because the feet are constantly impacting the ground, it is possible that the feet may not be able to detect serious injuries before it is too late. As a result, people with diabetes are at risk for injury and even amputation of the limb if the injury is severe enough. In addition, people with diabetes have a more difficult time healing.

A company was recently touted as having a sensor that could be worn as an undershirt. Attached to the shirt is a sensor that records the accumulative effects of the day's activities. The thought is that by monitoring the forces produced during the day's exercise and normal activities, the individual would be able to determine when repetitive forces reached a threshold where they put the feet at risk for breakdown of the skin.

Once the skin breaks down in a person with diabetes, there is the distinct possibility that the break in the skin will not seal over. Any ulcer may become more difficult to heal and in many cases impossible to heal. Therefore, the sensing device could alert the patient to increased risk for skin breakdown.

The device is manufactured by a company called Sensics. To date, the device is only available for health professionals who are in charge of caring for people with diabetes. Stay tuned.

What is interesting is that technology is being used to detect another threshold with respect to type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is the number one cause of amputations in the United States.

Many people are not able to alter their diet or exercise level to the degree that will significantly impact on their risk for developing type 2 diabetes. As a result many people have turned to supplements to give themselves an edge in the Sugar War that is all around us.

Omega 3 fatty acids have been shown to reduse the risk for people with pre diabetes progressing to type 2 diabetes. Omega 3 fish oil is known for its positive effects on a variety of health conditions including pre diabetes.

Diabetic Foods To Avoid When Managing Your Disease

ByDanilo OrinaPlatinum Quality AuthorArticle Word Count: 564[View Summary]Comments (0)

Different foods cause different reactions in your body chemistry. If you have diabetes, this fact assumes a whole new level of importance since it becomes vital to your health to learn about the foods that are beneficial for you, and which ones will cause negative effects on your blood sugar levels. Knowing the diabetic foods to avoid is essential since eating the wrong foods, or eating diet program them, could cause serious harm to your health.

Sugar

Top one of many diabetic foods to avoid is sugar and foods which are high in sugar-like sweeteners for example syrup and juice concentrates. Sugar is a straightforward carbohydrate that is rapidly absorbed into your bloodstream causing your glucose levels to spike and then crash afterward. To make matters worse, sweet foods such as candy, donuts, and cake, usually contain other harmful things that diabetics should avoid such as saturated fats and refined flour. Sugar is usually hidden in packaged foods that you wouldn't suspect also, so to avoid or limit your sugar intake, you need to read package labels for the quantity of sugar grams in the food.

Cholesterol

Diabetes is linked with cholesterol problems. Even when it doesn't lift up your overall cholesterol reading, it has a tendency to decrease your good cholesterol and lift up your bad cholesterol and triglycerides. Watching your dietary intake of cholesterol is important because of this. Diabetic foods to prevent if you want to limit cholesterol include egg yolks, organ meats, and full fat milk products.

Fats

Some fats, like essential olive oil and flax oil, are heart healthy, but others, particularly trans fats, are closely related to a rise in cardiovascular disease and obesity. Diabetes is tied to heart disease and obesity and these three conditions seem to go hand-in-hand among lots of people who eat diets high in saturated fats and sugar. Therefore, diabetic diets restrict fat intake in addition to control carbs. Trans fats should be avoided altogether. Additionally, you should limit saturated fat intake by selecting lean cuts of meat and non-fat or low-fat dairy products. Fried foods should be avoided, including most fast foods.

Some Vegetables and fruit

It may be surprising, but diabetic foods to avoid also include some vegetables and fruit. Fruit drinks particularly can cause your glucose levels to spike. It is usually best to eat raw fruit instead therefore the added fiber decelerates the absorption of sugar. Starchy vegetables such as potatoes and squash possess a higher glycemic index value and really should be replaced by non-starchy varieties for example peas and green beans. It can be surprising which fruits and vegetables cause blood sugar levels spikes and which ones don't, so consulting an index list chart is a good idea when planning your meals.

Alcohol

Alcohol based drinks will also be on the list of diabetic foods to avoid. Alcoholic drinks affect your blood glucose levels and impair your liver which needs to function optimally to keep your body chemistry under control when you have diabetes.

Researching the diabetic foods to avoid is essential to your health. Eliminating them out of your diet will help manage your problem and reduce your risk of medical complications such as heart disease, vessel disease, and obesity. Being a conscientious food label reader helps also so you don't have to guess, but will invariably be aware of composition of the foods you consume.

A Protein That Is Responsible for Diabetic Stroke

ByJack MendozaArticle Word Count: 291[View Summary]Comments (0)

Stroke is one of the major complications of diabetes. Strokes take place when the blood vessel is either blocked or burst. Risk factor for strokes happens if a person has high blood pressure, apple-shaped body, high cholesterol and smoking habits.

Back on August, a research done by Medical College of Georgia researchers claimed that an antibiotic drug could provide the answer in halting strokes from happening. Minocycline, is an antibiotic drug that helps patients with diabetes to lessen remodeling of the blood vessel that enhances stroke risk and can also stop bleeding which is followed by stroke.

Now researchers from Joslin Diabetes Center said that they know the culprit behind stroke. A protein plasma kallikrein which is responsible for normal clothing process in the brain could provide the way to control stroke among diabetics.

In the study, the scientist added a small amount of blood into the brain of the lab rats. Overtime, the rats' brain bled. When they have introduced a substance that obstructs the protein's effect, brain damage has dropped down. On the other hand, when one hundred percent of plasma kallikrein was introduced into the brains of the rats, it doesn't show any changes for the controlled mouse but has a devastating effect for the diabetic rats.

Although the discovery is essential in making drug that could control the plasma in the future, there are already few ways to escape diabetic stroke. Here are some of the ways to manage diabetes and to stay away from its complications such as stroke.

1. Controlling the blood sugar level
2. Controlling blood pressure
3. Having a low-fat diet meal that is rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains
4. Daily exercise routine
5. Having an ideal weight
6. Stop smoking
