Type 2 Diabetes - Why Eat 3 Square Meals And Snacks To Have Better Blood Sugar Control?

Having a healthy balanced diet is the cornerstone of treatment in the management of Type 2 diabetes. According to the Royal Children's Hospital's Diabetes Manual, the food pyramid is the ultimate guide for the diet of anyone with diabetes. Using the food pyramid enables a diabetic to follow a normal, yet healthy diet plan. Furthermore, this healthy kind of dieting method allows you some room for better weight management. The amount and composition of your usual meal is adjusted to have bulkier content, through the use of fruits and vegetables, but with lesser calories.

You may be wondering why your doctor and dietitian encourage you to eat three square meals per day including snacks in between when you really have to control your blood sugar. Is this contradicting the principles in the management of Type 2 diabetes? If you are on insulin or oral anti-diabetic medication, then these medication are the reason why your doctor is advising you to eat three square meals each day including your snacks. You see, your medications tend to lower your blood sugar levels. And if you try to skip a meal, you blood sugar may dip so low creating a complication called hypoglycemia.

What is hypoglycemia?

The National Diabetic Information Clearinghouse defines hypoglycemia as the state of low blood sugar level. Hypoglycemia may cause an array of symptoms such as:

shakinessnervousnessdizzinesslight-headedness or headacheexcessive hungerconfusionanxiety, andunusual sweating

In worst cases, severe hypoglycemia may lead to coma and even death.

When your doctor advises you not to take any medications for your Type 2 diabetes, do you still need to have three square meals and snacks?

If you are only using some lifestyle modifications to control your blood sugar, it is not necessary to include snacks in your healthy eating plan according to the Royal Children's Hospital. The reason why snacks are needed is to have a consistently controlled level of blood sugar in Type 2 diabetics taking medication.

Also, researchers have concluded that eating irregular meals appears to produce a higher level of insulin resistance and higher cholesterol levels after fasting than does eating regularly scheduled meals.

It is always important to have the proper guidance of your dietitian in planning your meals and snacks. The reason for this? Different carbohydrate sources affect your blood sugar in different ways. Because of this, your dietitian needs to plan a diet that will ensure your blood sugar level will not become too high in the process or dip too low so as to cause hypoglycemia.

Non-Pharmaceuticals in the Control of High Blood Sugars, High Cholesterol, and High Blood Pressure

Diabetes
Diabetes involves an impaired system of the body that controls the levels of sugar that normally circulates in the bloodstream after eating a meal. Diabetes is a condition of higher than normal blood sugar levels and is a chronic disease for which there is no cure. Diabetes can lead to other serious health complications if not treated and managed in order to bring the higher than normal blood sugar levels to within a close to normal range. There are several forms of diabetes the main forms being Type-1 Diabetes, Type-2 Diabetes, and Gestational Diabetes. By far the most prevalent is type-2 diabetes at about 90 percent of all cases of diabetes.

Cardiovascular disease
Cardiovascular disease is one of the major complications suffered by people with diabetes and is the cause of most deaths among the diabetic population of North America. According to the American Diabetes Association, adults who have diabetes have heart disease death rates that are about 2 to 4 times higher than adults who do not have diabetes - and the risk for stroke is 2 to 4 times greater for people with diabetes.

Diabetes, cholesterol, blood pressure, and body weight
Most diabetics are overweight, as are most Americans, and many have high blood levels of cholesterol and also high blood pressure, all of which increases the risk of heart disease.

So this means that, in addition to the need for the diabetic to control their higher than normal blood sugar levels that cause the diabetes disease, they must also be aware of how to combat and minimize the risks of developing cardiovascular disease, and like diabetes, that will probably involve dietary modification and the addition of exercise for those who are physically capable of doing so.

Diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, excess body weight, and the other complications of diabetes, must be treated by physicians who will prescribe an appropriate course of treatment to manage and, where possible, reverse the conditions.

In addition, it may benefit patients to become familiar with the several aspects of heart disease and much can be found at the website of the American Heart Association and this month February, 2011, is officially "American Heart Month".

Natural supplements may help combat high cholesterol levels and heart disease
In addition to the conventional treatment approach, some cardiologists advocate adding various supplements to the daily diet to also help prevent or treat heart disease and also diabetes, which is now considered as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

Supplements: Q-10, L-Carnitine, E-Ribose, Alpha-lipoic acid, gymnema sylvestre, vanadyl sulphate
Cardiologist Dr. Stephen T. Sinatra, in his book on the subject titled The Sinatra Solution, published 2005 by Basic Health Publications Inc., recommends the dietary inclusion of such items as Coenzyme Q-10, L-Carnitine, and D-Ribose for heart disease and for diabetes recommends the use of alpha-lipoic acid, gymnema sylvestre, and vanadyl sulphate. There are ample references to those substances in the literature of alternative medicine and some of them have been in use for many years.

In recent years, many natural substances have been suggested as being effective in lowering cholesterol, substances such as pomegranate fruit and juice, red yeast rice, pantethine - the active form of vitamin B-5, and many others. And there are many fruits and nuts that appear to have special properties and ingredients that enhance the health of those who consume them.

The need to be informed about personally taking care of your health and wellbeing
The recommendation here, from someone who is a diabetic with cardiovascular disease, is that diabetics and others at risk should try to become properly informed on the subject of so-called "natural" foods, sometimes referred to as nutraceuticals, get to know the suspected benefits and the possible negative effects if any. There is a vast source of information, some of which may not be reliable, so my further suggestion is to follow the recommendations of cardiologists or other medical practitioners who have gained a reputation for their achievements in treating patients. There are many who have authored excellent books, available in most public libraries - I rarely leave the library without one or two. I also watch websites and seek out publications of institutions such as the Mayo Clinic, the Harvard School of Public Health, the American Diabetes Association, and such.

In conclusion
Like most diabetics, my primary concern is to deal with my condition of higher than normal blood sugar levels and I am diligent in taking the diabetic medicines prescribed by my doctor. Although it is essential for persons with diabetes and other diseases to be cared for by a physician, much of the management of the health condition is left in the hands of the individual. It helps to read and learn of the ways to best prepare for and prevent or reverse diabetes and cardiovascular diseases if possible. The doctor should be kept informed about any supplements or other substances, that you may wish to take, but I also realize that many doctors are not well informed or up to date, in the same way for instance as the doctor mentioned above, Stephen T, Sinatra, who has authored a number of informative books for the general reader, as have many other practitioners.

Author's Comments:

Heart disease is a serious life threatening complication that frequently develops from diabetes, most adult diabetes sufferers unfortunately die of heart disease, As a diabetic with cardiovascular complications I empathize with my fellow diabetics who must deal with the parallel disease conditions. Control Your Diabetes With a Diet for Type 2 Diabetes

ByG. ArthurPlatinum Quality AuthorG. Arthur

Having recently been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes I have compiled a considerable amount of research into the condition. So much so that I fell ... Article Word Count: 494[View Summary]Comments (0)

The good thing (if there is a good thing), about having type 2 diabetes is the Diet for Type 2 diabetes; you get to eat more often! It is not a good thing to go without food for more than 5 waking hours without a meal or snack. You will need to avoid your blood sugar having wild swings by eating late or skipping meals. By keeping your appetite under control you will not have a surge in your glucose when you finally do have something in your stomach.

So starting with breakfast and eating snacks between your meals all day keeps your blood sugar levels stable. This can be a plus as it keeps your metabolism on a high, which in turn, burns more calories. It is noted that people that ate breakfast had a 35 - 50 percent lower chance in having metabolic problems such as type 2 diabetes and obesity. The plan is not to have your hunger build up so you're so ravenous that when you do eat, you may get into trouble with your blood sugar. So the diet for Type 2 diabetes is to keep some balance when eating your meals.

So the operative word here is balance. By eating more often is doesn't mean you can eat anything you want. Actually, the more vegetables eaten the better it is as they are an ideal food. They are low in fat and high in fibre and rich in many vitamins, minerals, and many nutrients. They also contain good sources of complex carbohydrates and lesser amounts of protein. Of course you would like to feel satisfied at the end of a meal, but the foods you would be eating should be balanced as well.

Some protein, carbohydrates and at least one fruit and vegetable is a good balance. The fruit is a good choice as a desert or with your breakfast. The diet for type 2 diabetes is a healthy diet, as you can bulk up your meal with lots of produce. If your are among the many that need to lose weight, it doesn't mean you have to cut out processed foods and sweets, it means it all comes down to portion size and balance, but you still have to decrease your caloric intake in order to lose weight.

A great habit for anyone of course is to trim the fat and that is exactly you should be doing. Make sure your cuts of meat are as fat free as possible. That means that crispy chicken skin comes off. Fat has twice the calories as carbohydrates and protein. Of course you can still have dairy products, but just keep it to the low-fat versions. A low- fat sour cream or salad dressing is better on your potatoes and bread than putting all that butter. There are many ways to make your food delicious without fat content. A chat with a nutritionalist can put it all together for you.

Are you a prediabetic or have you just been told that you have type 2 diabetes? If the answer to this is yes then you need to take immediate action to reverse your diabetes. Learn how to lower your blood sugar naturally without having to take drugs or insulin shots.

Diabetes Control Diet Keeps Your Blood Sugar Under Control

ByDanilo OrinaPlatinum Quality AuthorArticle Word Count: 562[View Summary]Comments (0)

Diabetes is a complex disease. Type 1 diabetes is pretty straightforward for the reason that the body can't produce enough insulin so insulin replacement is required to control the condition. Type 2 diabetes is very different. With it, the body produces enough insulin, your cells aren't able to utilize it. It is often a part of an insulin resistance syndrome of which high sugar is just one part. A diabetes control diet plays a huge role in stabilizing blood sugar. The goal of diabetes management would be to keep blood glucose levels in a normal, steady range because levels lacking or too high can result in serious health complications.

Your glucose levels are affected by a number of things. How well your body responds to insulin is one, and also the type of what you eat is another. When you eat foods with simple or refined carbs (sugar and white flour) the carbohydrates are rapidly changed into glucose therefore the levels in your blood rise quickly. Although your pancreas may be stimulated to release more insulin to combat the excess sugar, your cells cannot make use of the insulin so your sugar levels stay elevated. When blood sugar levels are elevated long-term, damage is performed to your heart along with other organs.

A diabetes control diet helps overcome this situation by helping you avoid those glucose spikes from simple carbohydrates. The goal would be to keep the blood sugar levels within a normal range and ensure that it stays from dipping and crashing during the day, especially after meals. Specifically, you will have to monitor and regulate your consumption of carbohydrates. Some, like sugar and refined carbs, will have to be strictly limited. It is best to stick with complex carbs that cause sugar to be released more slowly within your body. Even so, you will still have to monitor your intake of those.

Another thing a diabetes control diet emphasizes is to eat meals on a frequent set schedule. This prevents your glucose levels constant throughout the day. Should you skip meals, your levels may drop too low. If you eat too many carbs in way too short of the time, your levels may elevate from the acceptable range. Therefore you'll be watching not only the quantity of carbs you consume but also the timing of these.

A diabetes control diet isn't just about carbohydrates though. This diet also improves your general nutritional intake as it makes you consume less saturated fat and cholesterol. Additionally, it provides you with a well-balanced, nutritious diet. A diabetes control diet is not necessarily overly restrictive. Instead, it's a life-style change that improves your overall health.

A diabetes control diet may help you lessen your dependence upon diabetes medication, or it may significantly delay if you should start taking them. Plus when you're able to maintain your blood sugar levels within an acceptable range, you reduce your risk of complications like peripheral nerve, cardiovascular, or damage to the eyes.

Diabetes affects many of your body's systems, particularly when it is coupled with insulin resistance that is often the case. Your body may send mixed signals that create you to crave carbohydrates when they're the very thing you need to avoid. Whenever your body has problems utilizing insulin, a diabetes control diet is a vital and effective tool to keep your blood sugar levels under control.
